Which image format should you choose?
Each format has its strengths. Here is a simple guide:
- JPG: the universal photo format. It opens everywhere, from old phones to printers and administrative websites. Choose it when you are not sure, or when compatibility matters most.
- PNG: lossless, with transparency. Ideal for logos, screenshots and graphics with text. Not ideal for photos, which become very heavy.
- WebP: a modern format made for the web. Usually lighter than JPG at the same quality, and it supports transparency. All current browsers display it.
- AVIF: the newest of the four, often even lighter than WebP. Supported by recent browsers, less so by older software.
In short: JPG for sharing, PNG for graphics, WebP or AVIF for websites.
How to convert an image online
Choose the output format, then drop your images. Plume decodes each file, converts it and compresses it with the quality preset you choose. You see the new size next to the original size before downloading.
You can mix formats in the same batch: iPhone HEIC photos, PNG screenshots and WebP images downloaded from the web can all be converted to JPG in a single step. If you also need smaller dimensions, set a maximum width or height at the same time.
Looking for one specific conversion? These pages explain each case in detail:
- HEIC to JPG for iPhone photos;
- WebP to JPG for images saved from websites;
- PNG to JPG and JPG to PNG;
- JPG to WebP and image to AVIF for faster websites.
What happens to transparency and quality?
Two points are worth knowing before you convert:
Transparency
PNG, WebP and AVIF can have transparent areas. JPG cannot. When you convert an image with transparency to JPG, Plume fills those areas with white. Converting to PNG, WebP or AVIF keeps the transparency.
Quality
Converting from a lossy format (JPG, WebP, AVIF) to PNG does not bring back detail that was already lost. The image looks the same, but the file is often heavier. Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF applies the quality you choose, so you can balance size and sharpness.
Convert images without sending them anywhere
Unlike most online tools that upload your files, Plume converts images directly in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your device. Once the page has loaded, conversion even works offline.
By default, EXIF metadata is removed from the converted file. This hidden data can include the GPS location of a photo. The orientation is kept correct, so pictures appear the right way up.
Free batch conversion
Convert one image or several hundred. There is no account to create, no watermark and no daily limit. Download your files one by one or all together in a ZIP. The only limit is your device’s memory: computers handle large batches easily, while phones prefer smaller ones.
Just want lighter files in the same format? Use Compress image instead.
Common reasons to convert an image
Some situations come up again and again:
- A form refuses your photo. Many administrative and job websites only accept JPG or PNG. Converting HEIC or WebP to JPG solves it.
- A colleague cannot open your file. Older office software and some photo viewers do not read WebP, AVIF or HEIC. JPG works for everyone.
- Your website is slow. Converting large JPG and PNG images to WebP or AVIF makes pages lighter.
- You need a transparent logo. PNG or WebP keep transparent backgrounds; JPG does not.
- You want to edit without losing quality. PNG does not degrade when saved again and again.
Whatever the reason, the steps are the same: choose the output format, drop your images, download.
