Online file compression, without the upload
Most online tools that compress or convert files work the same way: you upload your document to their server, it is processed there, and you download the result. That means your contract, your payslip or your family photos travel across the internet and sit, at least for a while, on someone else’s computer.
Plume works differently. All the processing happens inside your browser, on your own computer or phone, using a technology called WebAssembly. Your files are never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, you can even disconnect from the internet and keep working.
It is also faster in practice: there is no upload to wait for and no download from a server afterwards. The only limit is the memory of your device. Files of a few hundred MB work well on a recent computer; phones are happier with smaller files.
What you can do with Plume
Compress documents
- Compress a PDF: images inside are recompressed, unused data is removed. Scans and photo-heavy PDFs often shrink by 50 to 90%, while text stays selectable.
- Word, PowerPoint and Excel: the pictures inside are compressed and the file is repacked. It stays fully editable.
Compress and resize images
- Compress images in JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC, with a quality slider and the size before and after.
- Dedicated tools to compress JPEG and compress PNG.
- Resize images in pixels or percentage, proportions kept.
Convert images
- The image converter turns any image into JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF.
- Common conversions: HEIC to JPG, WebP to JPG, PNG to JPG, JPG to PNG, JPG to WebP and image to AVIF.
Why make your files smaller?
Heavy files cause small problems every day:
- E-mail: Gmail accepts attachments up to 25 MB, Outlook up to 20 MB. A scanned contract or a few phone photos can go over.
- Online forms: administrative websites, banks, schools and job platforms often refuse files over 2 to 5 MB.
- Websites: large images slow pages down, especially on mobile.
- Messaging and storage: lighter files send faster and take less room on your phone and in the cloud.
In most cases, you can make a file several times smaller without any visible difference. Plume shows you the size before and after, so you can choose the right balance between quality and weight.
Your privacy, by design
Because files are processed on your device, there is no copy of them on a server, no storage period, and nothing to delete afterwards. Plume does not need an account, so it does not know who you are.
Images also lose their EXIF metadata by default. This hidden information can include the date, the phone model and the GPS location where a photo was taken. The orientation of the picture is kept correct.
The site uses cookie-free, privacy-friendly statistics that count page views only. That is why there is no cookie banner. All the details are on the privacy page.
